UK, Department of Health gives go-ahead for prescribing antivirals for influenza

7:14 AM

GPs in England have been given the go-ahead to prescribe antiviral medicines at NHS expense for the prophylaxis and treatment of influenza in certain patient groups.
In a letter issued today (27 January 2014), the DH’s chief medical and pharmaceutical officers, Dame Sally Davies and Keith Ridge, explain that surveillance data indicate that people presenting with flu-like symptoms are likely to be infected with a flu virus. They remind prescribers of the groups eligible for antiviral medicines: those over 65 years of age, those in certain clinical "at-risk" groups, including pregnant women, and others who are at risk of complications if not treated.
